“Open source as a business model, in isolation, is pretty much unsustainable”

by @ Thursday, May 26th, 2005. Filed under general

More from McVoy.
You may recall my previous post pointing to a Forbes article about BitKeeper. It sounds like Larry is speaking out more. In fact the title is a quote from Larry.
Here is the article http://www.forbes.com/execpicks/2005/05/26/cz_dl_0526linux.html
Some more gems
But McVoy says it is simply not possible for an innovative software company to sustain itself using [...]

Whoops… Free support costs…

by @ Wednesday, May 25th, 2005. Filed under general

Well it looks like one of the guys who has really helped Linux over the years has had enough.
http://www.forbes.com/home/business/2005/05/25/cz_dl_0525linux.html
Basically the guy who runs the company that supplies BitKeeper, the source control system for the Linux OS has said enough is enough, you guys get to pay for it now. He had been letting the Linux [...]

Blue Angels

by @ Saturday, May 21st, 2005. Filed under general

I was lucky enough to live in SE Michigan today. Not only was it an absolutely beautiful and perfect Jeep Wrangler day, we have an Air National Guard base here called Selfridge ANG that had an Air Show. It is usually a very quiet place with moments of excitement when you hear jets taking off [...]

What makes Microsoft great…

by @ Saturday, May 21st, 2005. Filed under general

Many people think I hate Microsoft because I can be harsh concerning how they do things.
Many other people think that I am in love with Microsoft and a cheerleader because I point out that I am a Microsoft MVP.
The answer, as with many things, is somewhere in between. I point out things I [...]

Windows Server Cookbook

by @ Saturday, May 21st, 2005. Filed under tech

I meant to post this previously, the Windows Server Cookbook is now available.
For those who wonder, why does joe care? I care because I was technical reviewer for it and also I wrote chapter 17 which is a chapter on Exchange with several Exchange scripts. Personally I think the chapter is well written [...]

Like I said… Tana Lost…

by @ Saturday, May 21st, 2005. Filed under rants

As you will recall from my previous blog http://blog.joeware.net/2005/05/08/11/ I forecast that Tana lost due to how she treated her team.
Call me Nostradamus or something, but if you saw the season finale of The Apprentice, she did indeed lose and it was all about how she treated her team. She knew she was losing too, [...]

Where are the updates

by @ Friday, May 13th, 2005. Filed under updates

I have fielded quite a few questions lately around the topic of “Where are the updates and new tools?”. Well the answer is I am quite busy with real work and other things. I would love to just work on joeware every day, every week, every month because I love doing this stuff. However it [...]

joeware website fixes

by @ Friday, May 13th, 2005. Filed under general

Some of you may have noticed that various links were screwed up and some pages were displaying odd characters at the end of the page. This occurred when I had to quickly jump from one web provider to another. At the same time I changed the URL for the forum and the ftp program I [...]

Active Directory Property Set Madness

by @ Tuesday, May 10th, 2005. Filed under tech

Let’s talk property sets… I have ranted about them before but got reminded again today about how much I like them and hate them and figured, I will blow off steam and rant and see if anyone feels the same and is willing to respond.
Property sets are an amazingly great idea. I mean really, kudos [...]

Ebay and Google Books

by @ Monday, May 9th, 2005. Filed under rants

I went to Border’s tonight because my g/f wanted to pick up some books. So in the meanwhile I thought, hmm, let’s check out the computer selection.
I walk around and what do I see but 3-4 shelves of books dedicated to Ebay shopping and selling. Do we *really* need 3-4 shelves worth of those [...]

Tana lost…

by @ Sunday, May 8th, 2005. Filed under rants

Watch The Apprentice? If so did you catch this last week’s episode?
I think Tana lost. Whether she wins the show or not, she lost.
Why? I expect people who work for the trump organization might be watching. They all got to see Tanna say to Carolyn something to the effect of “how about those [...]

Non-expiring IDs anyone?

by @ Sunday, May 8th, 2005. Filed under tech

Many companies run around with non-expiring service IDs not realizing how insanely insecure that is.
Look around people, MS was even hacked because of unchanged service IDs several years back and I recall hearing how billg had put out a message that they were going to stop using non-expiring accounts. I expect that dropped by [...]

by @ Friday, May 6th, 2005. Filed under general

Well I have received word that some joeware tools are again featured in an article in Windows IT Pro Magazine. The specific tools are supposed to be adfind and admod but I have yet to have seen the article myself.
Some previous feature articles that talked about joeware are
