As I have mentioned previously, I live in Michigan. It is a generally good state, there are things that really bother me about it such as the months of December through February inclusive, the city of Detroit in its entirety, the ultra conservative folks of western Michigan (Grand Rapids primarily), the preponderance of obese people (especially when they take up handicap slots because they can’t walk across the parking lot), the near complete lack of any decent public transportation (yes it is the motor city state I know I know), and other things.
However sometimes even the bad things make me laugh or feel good. We got blitzed yesterday with another decent snowfall. The temperature was hovering in the 32/33 area so it didn’t know if it was going to rain or snow so we got the huge heavy near pre-made snowball size flakes. You know the kind, you go out to pack a snowball and your gloves are soaked completely and if you hit anyone with the snowball it will seriously knock them out if it doesn’t kill them. Well we got 4-6 inches of that stuff, you would get tired just walking in it.
So anyway, for a long time I would shovel snow when we got it because honestly, I didn’t care too much because I have a Jeep and Dodge 4×4 2500 and when I need to go somewhere, snow isn’t going to stop me. However it was always a pain for folks who decided to visit and plus after packing the snow down with the 4×4’s you end up with an ice rink. So last year I picked up a snowblower. This isn’t just your normal little 2HP snowblower. I figured, if I am buying a snowblower, I should get something serious. So I picked up this beautiful 10.5HP electric start, high beam headlight, 28″ wide deck 2-stage monster that throws snow in an arch that I can easily walk under. My neighbors would tend to look at me like an idiot because I spent $x on snowblower of southern Michigan which normally might need say a $x/2 snowblower.
So imagine my joy when I go out to the garage and fire that big dog up by pushing the button and have it pull me into the snow and it growls as it spits that heavy white stuff up and shoots it well off into the grassy portions of the yard. No slowdown, just pure unbridled snow eliminating power. Further imagine my joy when I see neighbors with their $x/2 snowblowers hit the snow and stopping near dead and maybe throwing it the distance a 2 year old might throw it. Further my neighbor across the street is pushing his snow around with his lawn mower with a snow blade attachment but can only push it so far before his wheels spin and is unable to push it any further.
I made quick work of my driveway (about 90-100 ft I would guestimate) and then go to one neighbor who isn’t home and cleared his driveway and then I cleared the road (they don’t like to plow our road for some reason) for about 300 or so feet from edge to edge. I also moved some of the snow the tractor guy pushed all together so when it snows again, he has a clear area to push more snow (well if it doesn’t all melt).
I have to say that I haven’t liked playing in snow that much since I was a kid and didn’t have to think about driving in it and avoiding all of the boneheads who aren’t qualified to drive on dry pavement let alone slippery snow covered roads.
Oh and I made myself some hot cocoa too.
Happy Friday, have a great weekend.
