So if I were to write a book…

by @ 11:41 pm on 2/5/2010. Filed under general

…what would you guys like to see in it?

I am once again thinking about writing a book for AdFind and AdMod coupled with LDAP basics, Active Directory basics, and ADAM / ADLDS Basics. Then maybe some discussion on how to use all of the above mentioned products. Basic guidelines I give folks when I asked. Top questions I am asked and the responses I give, etc.

The idea would be to do some sort of self publishing with this through Amazon or something like that so anyone anywhere can order it and get it.

Thoughts?

I would love to learn some more LDAP commands. Since the LDAP commands are such an important part of using your ADFind and ADMod tools, having some additional ideas of LDAP searches that can be run would be helpful. Much like you do with your ADFind help function, I find examples to be extremely helpful to get me started.

Thanks for all your tools as they are invaluable!

    Hello Joe,
    Great idea!!!
Would be a terrific resource for all of us.
Good if you could give some live examples where all these features are/can be implemented.
Your other book can be the technical reference into how AD is designed/ works.
This one can be a hands on book of usage examples and a bit of AD fundamentals.

    Best Regards,
    Ajai

My advice would be to go back through the switches in ADFIND \ ADMOD and look at why they are there and see what structure for a book you can get out of that. IME I’ve had tasks to do, haven’t seen how a particular set of switches in ADFIND applies, so I’ve worked out to do it in Powershell, only to later see someone do it with ADFIND.

It would be also good to see some bundles of commands. For example for dumping csvs of particular things before domain \ Exchange migrations.

I’m happy to offer suggestions\criticism along the way too πŸ™‚

I like the idea. I have always looked for a site with a lot of examples for those two tools. I never find anything or it’s scattered forum posts.

It would be a great idea Joe. Too many times admins are for more interested in accomplishing the task with a certain tool without necessarily realizing the need to decode the syntax, but when they have to do something similar they find themselves stuck.

A section on oldcmp and a summary of your blogs about lastlogontimestamp would help a lot of people.

I think a chapter just outlining your top 10 or 20 most used adfind/admod commands would be great too.

Let us know when we can pre-order πŸ™‚

Sucks that you are not making it to the summit but hopefully I’ll get to thank you for the tool in person at another conference someday.

    Thanks

    Mike

  7. Definitely a smashing idea. I (have in the past and continue to) especially like your ideas surrounding the practical applications of your tools and also AD security. AD concepts can be so abstruse that I’d like to know how, as a practical everyday administrator, what those all mean to me. How they interconnect. Unfortunately, all those GUIs mask too much of the underlying infrastructure; not a good thing in general. The practical consequences of the various AD components that aren’t usually discussed, that sort of thing.

How about some troubleshooting flowchart/algorithms–Things to watch out for when approaching most AD and Exchange problems?

This is not going to be easy, but most welcome and I’d definitely buy it.

    Good luck Joe.

LOL – I have started to gather some of my usages of Your tool with idea to put them in some sort of e-book for others.

I think that idea of gathering examples on practical usage of Your tools (and maybe some others) together in practical examples, from basic (object creation, modification) through searches (search for given object and attributes, search optimization etc) to more advanced once (how to check … ?? ACLs … ) will be extremely useful and also it would be great opportunity to explain things you are using from AD mechanics perspective.

If You will need help with review or testing … just ping me

I think it would be quite helpful to have some examples of how ADFind/ADMod can help with Defending Security Infrastructures. πŸ˜‰

    Scotte: LOL!

All: Thanks for the ideas. Keep them coming!

If it is self published, how do I get an autographed copy? πŸ™‚

In any event, I still keep showing people that need a good tool to find things in Active Directory ADfind. Some sort of getting started information would just help me so I don’t have to show people how to use it.

And, thanks for all the help over the years.
