How to determine basic info about your Exchange mailbox

  1. adfind -sc u:userid homemdb
  2. Take the value displayed for homemdb and parse it as per the following

CN=[DataBase Name],CN=[Storage Group Name],CN=InformationStore,CN=[Server Name],CN=[Admin Group Name],CN=Administrative Groups,CN=[ORG Name],CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,[Root Domain DN]

As you can see, you can quickly ascertain your

  • Root Domain DN [Root Domain DN]
  • Exchange Organization Name [ORG Name]
  • Administration Group Name [Admin Group Name]
  • Exchange Server Name [Server Name]
  • Storage Group Name [Storage Group Name]
  • Database Name [DataBase Name]

Example:

F:\>adfind -sc u:joe homemdb

AdFind V01.31.00cpp Joe Richards (joe@joeware.net) March 2006

Using server: 2k3dc02.joe.com:3268
Directory: Windows Server 2003

dn:CN=joe,OU=MailUsers,OU=joeware2,OU=Exchange,DC=joe,DC=com
>homeMDB: CN=DB1,CN=SG1,CN=InformationStore,CN=2K3EXC01,CN=Servers,CN=First Administrative Group,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=joeware,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=joe,DC=com
1 Objects returned

  • Root Domain DN = DC=joe,DC=com 
  • Exchange Organization = joeware
  • Administrative Group = First Administrative Group
  • Server = 2K3EXC01
  • Storage Group = SG1
  • Database = DB1
