Google has announced a new beta wireless broadband service which supports much of urban North America. It leverages an, until now, underutilized infrastructure that connects most homes in urban areas. Previously most network providers have been trying to leverage power lines and video based cable lines. Unfortunately the volume of the available media pipes are not large enough to supply an entire city or the larger urban areas that now exist with sufficient bandwidth. The head of bandwidth research and development at Google realized that they needed to start looking at bigger pipes that had previously been unexplored for this type of service if they really wanted to interconnect all of the homes. They believe they have solved that issue with the Google TiSP beta program. The free basic service is rated at 8Mbs download and 2Mbs upload. The highest rated bandwidth is 32MB download and 8MB Upload and is only $24.95 a month.

I was an early adopter of the TiSP program, I have been running on TiSP for at least 6 months now and quite honestly can’t believe the quality of the bandwidth. When I first heard about the program I figured Google would really stink the place up but have been really happy with the results.
