Joe,
Perhaps I missed this in an earlier post, but what are you going to do for high-speed Internet? DSL can’t be an option out in the sticks. Is Cable Modem available there? Would satellite based Internet satisfy you?

Very nice pics Joe. re: the horse stalls – those really need some work anyway, from the looks of them, so probably taking them out would be the first step to fixing them. I like your lift idea. I might drive my pony up there for a lift if I can’t find one closer to KS 😉
Joe
How long do you think it will take you to complete all the work you’re planning? Will this be done by yourself or will you pay somebody else to do it?
Brendan: I have Comcast cable eavailable as well as DSL and satellite. I thought between DSL and Cable only. Going to go with Cable since I will have it anyway.
Rich: Yeah they were rough… lol
Iain: Well I figure I will be doing various things for at least the next 3-5 years. I have been working on my last house on and off for the last 7 years and it was only 3/4 acre though the house was built in 1939. So now I have the opposite issue, house is 9 years old, but I have about 8 acres of undeveloped land. The horse stalls are already ripped out, one of the neighbors wanted them so I gave him a day to do it and he said it was impossible but he accomplished it. 😉 Concrete will be in by next week, one of my brothers is a garage manager at a concrete facility and he does concrete jobs on the side with his brother in law. He was out last night checking it out and smiling about the pole barn and one of his sons I think was dreaming of dirt bikes racing across the back yard. Garage I keep pushing out as I need to figure out exactly what all of the zoning rules, etc are for it. I intend to have the shell, roof, and siding done and then I will finish it. Painting in the house, etc, I expect will be done in the next 2 years and will likely be me and friends. Building of my home office and data center in the basement will be done within a month or two tops and will mostly be me. My brother walked through the house and saw things he said needed done like changing all of the Well inflow piping from plastic to copper and making it look like it was not done “half ass” as he called it when he saw it. I have to check on that, I am not sure if copper is good for untreated well water. Setting up the living room with a projector I visualize as a 4-6 month timeline and I will do that as well. Digging out the pond, well I want to make it pretty large so that will be a couple of year project likely, but the neighbor to my south said when the part behind him is cleared up he will build a gazebo and brick path to it because since it goes behind his yard he likes the idea of seeing it out there and looking nice. He is in construction business specifically on that kind of stuff. For doing a lot of that yard work I am looking at big tractors and back hoes. I found a Ford 555 Back Hoe that I am likely going to buy. If you google you will find lots of hits on them to see what they look like, it is the penultimate toy for kids who liked Tonka brand toys growing up. 🙂 After I get that I want a bull dozer and a dump truck….
Anything I can’t do myself, I will get someone. Anything that I think is silly or would take me too long for my internal timeline for the project I will have someone else do. Mostly I enjoy this stuff and especially at first I want to do things mostly on my own so I can see what I have to make sure I want to move forward. The other day I mowed for the first time and spent about 6 hours on it because I wanted to go really slow and learn the grounds. Where are the low spots the high spots the spots that get wet the spots that don’t grow much the rocks, stumps, metal stakes, etc. I also went through and trimmed all of the trees (at least down by the ground) in the near back yard and am burning the remains. I have had a bon fire every day/night. I love it. Best to date was about 15 feet high but I will hit the 20-25 foot mark by Halloween. 🙂
