You lose AD, you can’t do anything…

by @ 12:03 am. Filed under tech

I recenty wrote this paragraph below. The context is a discussion on mismanagement of Active Directory in Enterprise companies.

“In my dreams, one day, people will not consider AD a commodity or utility service. They will look at it as the integral piece of their corporate security and stability it truly is. AD often gets bumped up to be a critical app because of Exchange needs it but realistically, if you lose Exchange, so what, you can’t do email. You lose AD, you can’t do anything except maybe play with your own laptop.”

While I would like to see a day where AD just runs itself regardless, we aren’t there, I am not really thinking we ever will be for the larger companies, we need people who know what the hell they are doing with it and are supported in their efforts to support it.

Some people probably shouldn’t be pilots…

by @ 2:02 am. Filed under rants

I watched a Mythbusters this evening and this episode was about an airplane on a conveyer belt… The plane is going one direction, the conveyer belt is going the other direction at the same speed. What happens?

Well the myth is that the plane will sit there… Hello??? Why did this even have to be tested? I heard the premise and was like, well there is no question that the plane is going to take off, it isn’t a car, it is a plane, the wheel speed is pretty much immaterial unless it is causing tremendous drag on the forward motion and that is a function of poor rolling wheels not a conveyer belt.

The pilot they brought in to fly the plane actually believed the plane would sit in one place “like a brick”… ???? Come on. Seriously? Planes aren’t cars where any old idiot can get behind the wheel, or at least I would like to think so, seems like you should have some understanding of the physics of why the planes fly, etc.

Anyway…  We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

Cool technical links

by @ 12:10 pm. Filed under tech

Here are some cool techie propeller head things I have found recently. I am not endorsing them or saying I have used them, just found the links and they made me think hmmm, I need to check these out when I am not so busy and decided to share with all of you. 🙂

MSDN Code Snippet Gallery – http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/

Source Code Outliner for Visual Studio 2008 –http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=55E6FE58-2163-45E7-92D0-B9C298FBDFAD&displaylang=en

and the one that looked very cool to me… Microsoft Enterprise Search Express… Basically Live Search for your intranet. This looks to be similar to what Google sells for aout $3000… Could be very interesting. The one thing I really want to look into on this is security, the next will be perf. More random pics around the house

by @ 7:15 pm. Filed under house stuff

Got a special request for some more pics and so here you go. Excuse the poor formatting, I am trying to work with Trouble on my lap, when I am in the office on the computer she won’t stay off my lap, don’t understand it, very fickle, any other time she will only sit within about 5 feet of me but not on me. If I am in the office but not sitting, she will hang out in “her chair”. Its like she is jealous of the computer and is saying… Bet your computer doesn’t fit in your lap as well as I do. She gets really pissy when I start to type so she starts digging nails into my legs. Darn cats.

And in honor of the little trouble maker… here she is laying in her chair…

This is the back of the house after a snow storm a few weeks ago. Note the isolation. Love it. In order to look in my back windows you have to be in my yard and within rifle range. 🙂  It is nice because all around the house, no way to look in from the neighbors places really. I always hated that about my old houses. You walk around and look out a window and there is a neighbor looking at you. I am sure my old neighbors all have good stories of shows I put on for them LOL.

This is the view out my kitchen doorwall.

And another.

This is the view from the street. I think we had 12 inches of snow dumped on us for that storm. This is after it had already started melting. Anyway, I don’t care how good your eyes are, you aren’t looking in those windows and seeing anything. Especially since one room is the utility room, one room is Trouble’s room, and one is the den with bookshelves.

View out my front windows. Again, love the isolation and easy downrange rifle shot. 😉

This is a Christmas tree my neighbor Bob hangs from a Fire Engine Ladder Truck. It is lit with lights at night too. You can see it all the way down our street. Its nice to drive down your street and see it and start smiling. You don’t see that kind of fun in subdivisions where you pay dues and have to listen to arbitrary decorating rules, etc…

The street, it looked pretty cool but note how well plowed. Amazing, my streets in the city never looked this good even weeks after a snow storm and this was the next morning.

This is the tile work outside my office. Not a final pic, it still needed polishing.

And the bedroom set. Note that Trouble has to be right there thinking she is part of the solution… I tell her all the time… honey, you aren’t the solution and if you don’t stop extending your claws into my sheets you are quickly going to become a problem. I don’t think she gets it though.

And bedroom dresser. That picture is now hung up, not sure if it will stay or I will put a flat panel up. Not sure if I really want a TV in the bedroom in this house.

And I have to end with Trouble or else I will get claws in my thighs and I don’t need that from her.

Quickie house pic post…

by @ 2:44 am. Filed under house stuff

Here is a quick pic of what my home theatre is looking like. You will note the distinct lack of living room furniture except for my previously mentioned giant lovesac bean bag. Yes, no living room furniture yet. The set I wanted was discontinued when I ordered everything else and still haven’t found anything else I like.

So this first pic is the “wall unit” where I have the projector mounted and the receiver, cable box, DVD player, and currently regular XBOX. But the XBOX 360 Elite will go up there if it ever comes from Sharper Image (had GC’s). I have a 15″ 250 watt RMS powered subwoofer that should be here tomorrow or Wed that will be added. That will sit on the floor behind wherever the couch ends up. I still need to put some stuff up to clean up the wiring a little. That is a black ceramic gargoyle with gold wings up on the very top over the projector. No BluRay yet, but considering it, possibly a PS-3 though I don’t play enough games to even justify a single gaming system let alone 2 or 3 or the 4 if you count my Nintendo-64 too. Have a digital HD tuner on order right now to pick up the non-encoded stuff on cable. Oh that TV below the ladder is a Samsung 26″ Flat Panel I was using to test video signals with.

The second pic is the screen. The screen itself is 150″ but I am only getting about a 130″ image since I couldn’t get the projector far enough back. I put my PRS electric guitar in front of it so you can get a feel for size if you don’t know the Bose speaker line. That image is from normal digital non-HD cable taken around 2:40PM[1] and the doorwall on the left is on the west side of the house so that is pretty full sunlight coming in. It is amazingly bright when it is darker and you get a great movie theatre feeling once it is dark enough not to see the screen itself.

I look forward to having time to just sit and cuddle up and watch movies and chomp down popcorn with Amish Butter topping and Cherry Twizzlers.

[1] Yeah I know the metadata on the pic says 6:40PM…. Thanks. 🙂

Need Pet Advice?

by @ 2:43 am. Filed under general

This link is for the blog for Dr. Wheek’s Vet. Excellent Vet and a good part of why Wheeker is still alive. Last year I would have bet he would have been pushing up daisies at this point. I have to think he is one of only a handful of Guinea Pigs diagnosed and treated for heart disease. He takes heart meds every day now. But he says that is fine, he would rather take the meds than be in a small box in the ground. ;o)  Actually he acts like the pills are treats, I think he likes the crunchiness factor. Anyway he is doing amazing now and will probably outlive me. I haven’t seen him looking this good since he was like 2 years old.

P.S. Yes this is a late post but this is about the only time I get available for things like this.
