Do you use the command prompt?

by @ 12:21 am. Filed under tech

Don’t forget to set yourself up with a cool prompt then… Personally I like seeing the time and date stamp. You can do that by setting your prompt to be

$D $T$_$P$G

That ends up looking like

Thu 12/13/2007 23:18:23.03
C:\temp\test>

That has helped me track things down more than once. I highly recommend it along with setting the screen buffer size to 9999 and width to 200 characters.

Oh to change that permanently across an entire system, right click on My Computer, then properties, and then go into the system properties (or advanced properties) and look for Environment Variables. This will vary by OS flavor. Then in Environment Variables create a new system variable called PROMPT and set the above value in it.

Good Deal Sam’s Club

by @ 7:01 pm. Filed under tech

I was in Sam’s Club this evening buying some supplies for the month and found a heck of a deal in the computer area. Well a couple, first they had 320GB SATA Western Digital Drives for $49.99. I thought that was pretty darn good. But my bays are all full w/ 500GB drives.

The second better deal was for the Western Digital “My Book” World Edition 1 with Terabyte of storage. This thing is Gigabit ethernet and 1 Terabyte… For…. $299… Wow. I don’t need that storage but it is such a compaq form factor I am got it for backups of my pics and music.

You know you’re from California…

by @ 6:51 pm. Filed under humour

My sister who unfortunately lives in California sent this to me…

You know you’re from California if:

1. Your coworker has 8 body piercings and none are visible.
2. You make over $300,000 and still can’t afford a house.
3. You take a bus and are shocked at two people carrying on a conversation in English.
4. Your child’s 3rd-grade teacher has purple hair, a nose ring, and is named Flower.
5. You can’t remember . . . is pot illegal?
6. You’ve been to a baby shower that has two mothers and a sperm donor.
7. You have a very strong opinion about where your coffee beans are grown, and you can taste the difference between Sumatran and Ethiopian.
8. You can’t remember . . . is pot illegal?
9. A really great parking space can totally move you to tears.
10. Gas costs $1.00 per gallon more than anywhere else in the U.S.
11. Unlike back home, the guy sitting in Starbucks at 8:30 a.m. wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses who looks like George Clooney really IS George Clooney
12. Your car insurance costs as much as your house payment.
13. You can’t remember . . .. is pot illegal?
14. It’s barely sprinkling rain and there’s a report on every news station: “STORM WATCH.”
15. You pass an elementary school playground and the children are all busy with their cellphones or Ipods.
16. It’s barely sprinkling rain outside, so you leave for work an hour early to avoid all the weather-related accidents.
17. HEY!!!! Is pot illegal????
18. Both you AND your dog have therapists, psychics, personal trainers and cosmetic surgeons.
19. The Terminator is your governor.
20. If you drive illegally, they take your driver’s license. If you’re here illegally, they want to give you one.

Snicker

by @ 10:49 am. Filed under general

I was poking around the DEC2008 Web site looking for something and happened to run across one of those little advertising banners you always ignore[1]. It actually caught my attention because of a specific word combination that always catches my attention and cracked me up… It is below. Note that this is an animated GIF, you should see it changing. If you don’t, then I don’t know what to tell you, it changes on my machine. 🙂

[1] Sorry to the advertising people, just stating a simple truth, you have overdone it in this world and now things just don’t stick out as much because of the overdone status – I only have so much attention to grab so now simple lack of attention grabbing grabs my attention – say like Google’s search page. I will take Google’s search page over the Live search page any day of the week and Live is actually pretty simple and clean compared to say  Yahoo or Lycos or Dogpile or many other search engines that want to be portals and all of which give me a headache to look at.

Directory Experts Conference 2008 – Dean and joe show is a go…

by @ 5:19 pm. Filed under general

There was a little fallout over a previous blog entry where I casually mentioned that I may not be attending DEC in March 2008.

After looking over all of my priorities for the next year, receiving feedback from several folks, really thinking hard about things, and finally actually chatting on the phone with Dean and others I realized that DEC is definitely on the need to do list. Dean and I are geeked up to try and put something together that will make people’s propellers spin from cool tech and cause their bellies to hurt from laughter.

Obviously I will be supplying both the technical info and humour, Dean will be supplying the British accent to make it actually sound reputable. 🙂 Kidding of course. Dean will be supplying all technical content. I will be supplying far out opinions and pointing out why the command line should be your tool of choice for your Windows Admin needs. We both will appropriately insult each other for everyone’s (including our own) amusement and we expect that random folks on the DS (including DS backseat driver team) and Identity teams at Microsoft will be in the room and helping out with the insults and tech. Actually it will probably be some mix of all of those things and more. We have no clue what the final product will be at this point in time, we just know that we will enjoy the process and work hard to make sure you (that would be the “you”s that get off your butt and join us in Chicago March 2-5) enjoy the result.

Anyway, regardless of the time it takes us to prepare for the conference and the time taken to go to it, we just have too much fun and enjoy the people too much to miss it. It is like the family away from the family. Sure… Chicago in March… not my favorite time and place to see my cute kissin’ cousin Christine, that sassy feisty sister Stella, or that generous gregarious Uncle Gil but you do what you have to do to see the people you enjoy seeing. Next year however, I think the family reunion should be on some island…

So… come one come all, it will be fun. Not because we guarantee it, but just because that is what always seems to happen.

Register now folks!  – http://www.directoryexpertsconference.com/

Take a stand

by @ 12:53 pm. Filed under general, quotes

I was reading a book and saw this quote from a lady which I thought was a very good one. It is how I have spent my entire work career and I think overall, it has done well for me.

“Take a stand. You cannot be everything you might be if you are always keeping your options open.”

Good Definition

by @ 12:50 pm. Filed under general

My grandma sent this to me…

The following is the winning entry from an annual contest calling for the most
appropriate definition of a contemporary term.

This year’s term: Political Correctness…..

“Political correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical,

liberal minority that is then rapidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream

media which puts forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to

pick up a turd by the clean end.”

Primary PC finally up and running… And misc chatter

by @ 12:42 pm. Filed under general

So I moved to the new house back in mid October right? Well last night I finally got my main PC, Super Fast Mofo XP 32 (SFMXP32) up and running. Almost 2 months without that machine. I still don’t have my main TV up, I have a 26″ Samsung flatpanel up and running but that just plays the Classical Music channel on Comcast all day. The picture quality isn’t the greatest, I don’t know yet if that is because Comcast sucks or that TV sucks. I have watched a couple of Hero’s episodes I recorded on the media center over on my HP 17″ laptop so I am not completely in the dark, but pretty close. Just so much to do.

I have to say though, I didn’t much miss the primary PC not up and running except for the fact that it has all of my music (40GB worth) on it. I haven’t really missed the TV all that much either. I finally played Halo 3 over Thanksgiving when I was up at my sister’s house. I played with my nephews. It was fun, but I didn’t feel the rush I used to get with Halo previously. Lots of changes going on with the new house and stuff and I wonder, was all of the playing on the XBOX and watching TV and hanging out on the computer distractions to keep me busy? I don’t know. Maybe some day.

I am starting to have second thoughts on whether I will write the AD Cookbook Third Edition. I started going through some of the paperwork and just kept thinking, this is a major pain in the butt and I have better things to do. Especially considering O’Reilly approached me, I didn’t ask them if I could do it. I have so much stuff to do on the house and work and not to mention I want to start getting the joeware utilities updated for Windows Server 2008 because there will need to be a lot of changes to properly support it for my stuff. Plus I need to really look at getting Deviant Software (DVS) off the ground and going. We shall see, if the offer that finally comes through is amazing, I may stick with it, if not, it goes to the back of the pile.

I am also reconsidering speaking at DEC. Similar issue as with the AD Cookbook but slightly different. At this point in time, I think I would rather work on the house that week or go down to Florida and sit and hang out with my good buddy Dean. Kat if you have your ears on, you need to be there too. We need someone to pick on. 🙂

I know I know, I haven’t posted house pics in a while. I have been taking them still though. And now that I have my PC up with the photo editing software, it will be more likely I will get that done sooner rather than later. Just need to find some time to sit and sort through it all. But I will. 🙂

Latest update is I now received my bedroom furniture set – awesome, and my kitchen table – very nice, and a great little curio for my special glass items. I am also in the process of making the shelving for my fun knick knacks in my home office. I couldn’t find anything I liked that I could buy so decided just to get some wood and brackets and get the router and stain out and make something instead. It will take a little more time but I didn’t want to put something up that will bother me every time I look at it. Ditto for my living room furniture, what I wanted wasn’t available anymore when I went in to order. I figure it was meant to be and I will find something better later.

  take care,

         joe
