Comcast High Speed – not so good

by @ 10:23 am. Filed under house stuff

Ok, I have had a bit of time to do some downloading with my new Comcast High Speed connection, compared to (Wide Open West) WOW, it is pretty bad. I don’t even need speed tests to show it because it is that noticeable. Anyway the speed tests could be bad for comparison as Comcast could be faking those numbers out with local caching etc. Next big download from MSFT and I will know for sure how much slower this is, but I am not looking forward to downloading the next Longhorn update I can tell you…

So what can I say… Ugh.

There is a meeting next week for townshipwide wireless access, I am going to be there to hear who they use for their internet connectivity. Also I can say, if you live in an area that has WOW available, I would jump to WOW immediately.

Moved… sort of.

by @ 10:57 am. Filed under house stuff

So myself, the chinchillas (CFO and Directory of Research of joeware), and Trouble the cat (President/CEO of joeware) have moved into the new house last Saturday which I alternately call, the new house, the villa, or the farm. I am still searching for the right name for it. Of course, everything is a mess right now and most everything not house related is completely on hold.

Trouble isn’t happy, she won’t leave the first room (spare bedroom, master bedroom isn’t ready yet) I put her in and mostly hides under the bed. The chins aren’t happy either, they aren’t eating much hay but are eating their pellets which is good. Freddie keeps acting like I beat him when I go to see him and Peanut is just, well she is pretty much normal. Peanut was always the tough one in that relationship though. She is the boss.

I am sort of split between the old house (Blu House) and the new house (Farm/Villa). I have most everything I need to live in the new house, but my two main servers are sitting in the old house. I have to get my office fully set up before I move those. Well not fully set up, the carpet I chose to get is making me wait 3-5 weeks because it is some special carpet from California. Yes, project management error, I should have ordered it 3-5 weeks ago. I had no clue, everytime I have ever bought carpeting, someone was out within a day to measure and a couple of days to install. This new stuff I am getting is some premium twist, aka Shag with multiple sized (girth and length) fibers; very thick, very nice. It is Shaw TufTex (I think) Cheek to Cheek style if you know carpeting. I highly recommend it, it is what was in the living room and I fell in love with the style though I didn’t like it at first.

Yes, for the astute, you will note I said was… I kept getting a whiff of dog in the house and finally just decided to tear up the carpeting in the living room and master bedroom. Well the master bedroom carpeting needed it anyway, it was in rough shape from the look alone, although I figured I would give it a year. But no, I have a sensitive sniffer and smell things a lot of people don’t smell, like for those of you who cover B-O with perfume or cologne… No, you aren’t hiding anything, I smell you. Sometimes that is good (or very very good in some cases where some people smell better than their perfume), sometimes it is bad (or very very very bad in some cases where no perfume or cologne could do the trick). I kept saying it smelled bad, my brother and one of my friends kept saying, I don’t smell anything.. So I said, “I am ripping it up”.  I don’t know for sure but I think they both thought I was insane (I get that a lot lately), well until the carpeting started coming up and my friend was like “Oh that is horrible, I need a face mask!”. Once the carpeting and pad was out, the house, at least to me, smelled 10000% better. I also sprayed a bleach/water combination down and have some KILLZ oil based sealer I am going to put down to protect the new carpeting.

Err so where was I, oh yeah, the office. The office/datacenter is in the final stages of construction, I stayed up until 3AM last night painting (Behr Squirrel from Home Depot) and it turned out relatively well. I need to go to some furniture places and look into a desk and shelving as I am not using what I had before (kitchen cabinets with a counter) as I want this to look a more presentable and be a lot more comfortable.

So here is the office space as it stood when I bought it almost 2 months ago

Here is the office as of a few minutes ago (well part, harder to take pics of the space). Note that I haven’t been working on it the whole 2 months, most of that time was spent on other projects, realistically I have maybe a week or two of work into the basement walls (of which the office here is a small subset). The rest of the time has been on other projects.

and here is the Data Center from which I am working at this very second

At the very least I will have the wireless up and running today.

I know I know… I haven’t posted pics to http://www.joeware.net/housepics in a bit. I am taking the pics when I can, I just have to sit down and take the time to edit the photos and whip up the pages and upload them. Coming relatively soon.

I took this week off from work so I could try and catch up on some sleep and the house. I have gotten 6 hours sleep 3 nights in a row and one night of 8 hours, amazing how much better I feel though I noticed I am more aware of my damaged body too as I can feel the aches and pains more as well as bruises, contusions, cuts, gashes, slivers, etc.

My inbox is over 1500 messages and rising, if your message is in there, it will be processed, at some point. I don’t have time for email or IM or really anything right now so don’t be heart broken if I don’t respond. You have to have priorities on projects and if you don’t, well you never finish and I am very clear on my priorities at the moment, at least I have a very distinct #1 priority and a distinct #2 priority, everything else is in the “as they catch on fire and start to impact priorities #1 or #2” bin. 🙂

nuff said.

Misc “The Office” Quotes

Angela: Any problems?

Dwight: Well you left the TV on and your cat is dead. She’s in a better place. Actually, the place that she’s in is the freezer. Because of the odor.

Angela: I have this crazy thought, that I know is crazy, that maybe Dwight killed my cat. When I got home, Sprinkles’ body was in the freezer where Dwight said he left her, but all my bags of frozen french fries had been clawed to shreds.

Dwight: With the electricity we’re using to keep Meridith alive, we could power a small fan for two days. You tell me what’s unethical.

Michael: Is there a god? If not, what are all these churches for? And who is Jesus’s dad?

Still alive, just under water

by @ 12:03 pm. Filed under general

Howdy, I have gotten several emails the last couple of days containing questions of

  • was I alive|dead|ok?
  • can I have your source code if you are dead?
  • how’s the house?
  • how come you don’t post technical stuff anymore?
  • hey have you seen what the AFA has been doing lately?
  • how’s the car?
  • you playing much Halo 3?
  • why are you a total knee biter ya wanker?
  • heard you are speaking at DEC again next year, what are you speaking about?
  • if a train leaves San Francisco at 25 MPH and another train leaves New York at 65 MPH, what kind of tea are they serving?
  • how come CPAU doesn’t accept UPN format userids?
  • hey I know you were working on new versions of AdMod and AdFind, why haven’t you published them already?
  • I heard you got fired again… is this true?

The answer to all of that is that I am swamped, completely underwater. I am working on work stuff for a good 7-10 hours a day, then around 5PM driving to the new house (30-60 minutes depending on traffic) and working on that until 12AM-2AM or so and then coming home (20-30 minutes) and falling into bed. My chiropractor is ready to beat me to death I think. Oh and I have Federal Jury Duty starting next week for I think 2 weeks…

So…

alive…. yes

dead…. tired yes

ok…. sorta

source code… no

house… coming along

technical stuff… what’s technical stuff? 😉

AFA… don’t care about those weenies at he moment

car… tire place can’t keep 18″ tires balanced more than 200 miles, ordered new 20″ wheels

Halo 3…  sadly no, haven’t even bought the 360 to play it yet, or the game, do have the wireless accessories sitting though

knee biter… just because ya git

DEC… allegedly, but Chicago in March does not appeal to me, no clue what we will talk about though

Tea… Earl Gray

UPN… because it pisses my friend Geoff off

AdMod/Adfind… too busy, I want to test them more and actually add some more stuff. Hold your horses or send me oodles of money.

Fired… I hope not, but I am too busy too notice if so. 😉

Backyard of current house

by @ 11:39 pm. Filed under house stuff

For comparison… It is very odd jumping between the two houses…

The more time I spend at the new house, the more I don’t want to come back to the old house. It is so peaceful out there.

Great Email…

by @ 11:29 pm. Filed under general

I love these kinds of emails…

Using your oldcmp program for the first time.  So, it was late, I was hungry and tired, and for some reason I typed ‘oldcmp……..-users -disable..’ with some other switches, and hit ‘enter’.  And then I realized it once I hit enter that I was going to disable all users in our current domain with a password age greater than 30, which I ultimately wanted to do, but not at this time cause it wasnt during our ‘change management window’.  Then, with my heart beating like crazy, I looked at the report and realized only 10 were changed and the default -safety 10 saved me!  Thanks for implementing such a great idea, for us overworked admins who do stupid things like play with this stuff on a prod network when it is late and we are tired.
