I don’t understand people…

by @ Saturday, October 29th, 2005. Filed under house stuff, tech

Its official, I don’t understand people.
I am working on the tiling the kitchen floor in my house which was built in 1939. The thing I don’t understand is that as I rip up the crappy Pergo(t) flooring that was in place, I expect to see the main structural part of the floor. Why do I [...]

Batman Begins

Wow.
They finally got it right.

Bread and circuses

by @ Wednesday, October 26th, 2005. Filed under quotes

What is supposed to happen in a democracy is that each sovereign citizen will always vote in the public interest for the safety and welfare of all. But what does happen is that he votes his own self-interest as he sees it… which for the majority translates as ‘Bread and Circuses’.

Sloppy

by @ Wednesday, October 26th, 2005. Filed under quotes

I’ve never understood how God could expect His creatures to pick the one true religion by faith - it strikes me as a sloppy way to run a universe.

Human rights

by @ Wednesday, October 26th, 2005. Filed under quotes

The basis of all morality is duty, a concept with the same relation to a group that self-interest has to individual. Nobody preached duty to these kids in a way they could understand — that is, with a spanking. But the society they were in told them endlessly about their ‘rights.’ The results should have [...]

Sometimes I really am that slow…

by @ Wednesday, October 26th, 2005. Filed under tech

I was working on testing the new ADFIND beta (V01.27.00 beta 2)this evening when I ran into what confused the heck out of me and I eventually decided it might be a bug. I was trying to list some schema attributes and I had a strong idea of what should be returned…
The query was
adfind -schema [...]

Maybe a little stairway to heaven?

by @ Tuesday, October 25th, 2005. Filed under general

I just did something I don’t normally do.
I decided to spend money for something that I have no real need for and actually did it.
Another guitar.
I have had a 1978 Fender Accoustic guitar now for some 15 or so years. I actually got it in trade for a couch during one of my [...]

Phones, beepers, and PDAs

by @ Tuesday, October 25th, 2005. Filed under rants

What do phones, beepers, and PDAs have in common?
Well now a days lots of things and in fact one of any of those will function as the others.
What I mean in particular is that people have enslaved themselves to those devices.
When someone’s phone or beeper or PDA goes off do you see how they scramble [...]

Doing something to every machine in a list…

by @ Saturday, October 22nd, 2005. Filed under tech

Sometimes you want to run a simple command against every machine in a list or otherwise run a simple command and change one piece of info. Here is a quick and dirty script to do it.
For instance, lets say you want to check the AD Site every one of your Exchange Servers is in… You [...]

Parsing CSVs with perl

by @ Thursday, October 20th, 2005. Filed under tech

Ever want to parse a CSV file with perl?
If you have used perl, the answer is probably yes. What happens if the delimiter you use, say the comma, is also used in one of the fields but the field is quoted so the comma shouldn’t be visible when you parse the string by comma…
The logical [...]

I am at a loss for words….

I would rather the money have been spent on putting a man on the moon thanks…

With great fanfare, Alaska Airlines recently rolled out what it calls the “Salmon-Thirty-Salmon.” Thirty painters worked around the clock for 24 days to paint a 100-foot salmon on a 737 airplane, which went into service today.
The $500,000 paint job [...]

Customer Charge?

by @ Wednesday, October 12th, 2005. Filed under general

I was sitting here going through bills and was going slow since I had nothing pressing other than the fact I haven’t looked at the bills in a long time and realized that Consumers Energy charges me a customer charge of $7.50 for nothing other than simply being a customer. On top of that, [...]

No more GNU… thankyou

by @ Tuesday, October 11th, 2005. Filed under general

The author of NESSUS, a security scanning tool, has decided he has had enough of GNU. Given my feelings on the GNU license I find this pretty humorous.
I especially liked this comment which IMO helps debunk one of the big reasons people say that source code should be open to everyone…

Doom 3 sucks.

by @ Sunday, October 9th, 2005. Filed under general

I must be spoiled by Halo and Halo2. I picked up Doom3 for the XBox and I have to say, I am not impressed. The graphics are rather blocky and the play just isn’t that fun.
Not to say that Halo2 is perfect, the new two player on a single XBox mode sucks with how [...]

MVP Summit

by @ Sunday, October 2nd, 2005. Filed under tech

The summit was absolutely great.
We had some terrible issues with transportation but the time spent with the DS guys was outstanding. There were problems they were thinking about and working on that never occurred to me in the scope of the new features such as RODCs and stoppable/restartable AD that you may have heard [...]

illimitable

by @ Sunday, October 2nd, 2005. Filed under quotes

My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind.
