Media Center Edition 2005 users beware!

by @ 12:38 am on 8/12/2005. Filed under tech

I just wanted to put a quick blog entry out there to say if you run Media Center Edition 2005 beware of a new hot fix that recently hit Windows Update.

It is an update for eHome Remote control, some sort of rollup for various things… Well all I have to say is my remote was working just fine until I installed that patch, then my remote didn’t do anything at all. Thank billg for system restore as I was able to TS into the machine (no keyboard or mouse on the PC) and just timewarped back to the time prior to the patch install and told Windows Update to hide that little shit from my view so I don’t screw up and install it again.

I could try to figure out what is wrong with it… but honestly, I don’t care. I want my DVR to work, I don’t want to troubleshoot it just like I don’t troubleshoot the DVD player or TV.

I have seen something else recently that is a bit annoying as well, I delete a show from the MCE GUI and then look at the file system and still see the file. I have to actually reboot the machine and then MCE sees the file again and will let me delete it.

So, I heard there is a cool DVR solution for Linux/BSD, anyone have details? My MCE machine is an AMD 64bit machine with 2GB of RAM and just tons of disk (Sam’s club sells 250GB WD drives for $120).

Don’t get me wrong, I think the MCE is very cool. The quality of the video is simply amazing. If I had anything besides the two items above to complain about is the fact that I have video board based encoding but MS still writes those files as MS Proprietary ms-dvr files instead of MPEG files.

    Thanks!

  3. I’ve applied that fix and not had any issues on my MCE. Weird that you did.
Willing to repro again so we can debug it?

Not today… Tomorrow’s not looking very good either. 😉
