TweakUI saves the day…

by @ 5:11 pm on 9/8/2005. Filed under tech

I was playing around with GPO’s and Security Configuration and Analysis yesterday to verify a process I previously figured out where someone without GPO permissions but with OU permissions could override the domain policy for user password/lockout settings on local computers so that each computer in an OU could have its own policy defined locally without specifying OU policies to set the values. While I verified the process, I somehow also dorked up all of the icons on my desktop and in Explorer at the same time. Dumb me for testing on my main desktop machine. 🙂

The icons all switched to an icon that looked like a piece of paper with the top right corner bent over.

This was a pain but I went through and did a change icon for all of the desktop items and got them all corrected, but how to fix the darn drive icons and My Documents/Computer in Explorer. And it wasn’t all of my drives, just the icons for my DVD drive and DVD burner drive. I had no clue and then decided, I bet TweakUI can do it…

So I pulled out TweakUI, available here, and sure enough, last option —-> Repair | Repair Icons | Repair Now

Cheer! Thanks to the bright person who thought to put that option there.

I am curious though why my icons got toasted in the first place.

The why, who know… It’s windows, so sometimes it like a box of chocolat…

The how, well, I’ve had that happen to me before. Looks like there is an icon cache on the system that can get corrupted. TweakUI simply goes through the whole list and refreshes the cache…

By the way, keep posting the intersting information. Very insightful and useful.

    Thanks
