There was a comment directly on the blog entry about my wallpapering my ceiling as well as about 11 or 12 “are you nuts?” emails.
Anyway, the response is that yes I am nuts, but that is completely beside the point. This is a special vinyl wallpaper and it is sealed with paint after it is glued into place. The whole point of the wallpaper is to give a non-smooth finish. It could be anything to a random swirling to a very specific pattern. Depending on the color you paint and the style of wallpaper, you can make your ceiling have a faux plaster swirl or copper/tin plating, etc. It really is very cool. I happen to use the style of paper that could be used for faux copper plating, but instead of painting it copper colored, I paint it high gloss white to make it really stand out.
To show how cool, here is an image from my living room. Note I enhanced the light levels which threw the color slightly out of balance but I was trying to emphasize the pattern. It is very noticable when you see it in person.
Initially I saw the paper in home depot and I was thinking that would be great for walls that are less than smooth. Say old plaster/lathe that is getting a bit saggy or something. Then one day I am laying on the floor in my living room thinking man this room is sure boring, what can I do with it… Then I thought, what if I do something fancy with the ceiling. Initially I was thinking, well I will paint it like clouds and blue sky like they have at the Venetian and Caesar’s palace in Vegas. Then I thought, no, whoever may want to buy the house next may hate that and not buy it. So then I started thinking patterns and my mind settled on the wall paper. Since then, I have spoken with several folks who have said they have seen it elsewhere so I can’t patent the idea or anything, just enjoy it.
