Vista Build 5365 (beta 2)

by @ 8:49 pm on 4/27/2006. Filed under tech

Well I just completed loading Vista Build 5365 (beta 2) on my HP DV8000…

Huge improvements over build 5342. For starters the installation maybe took 80 minutes which is drammatically faster and obviously the installation looks much better. The build still doesn’t set up my sound card yet though which is a trifle annoying, I will actually see if I can get that working this time because I want to use the Laptop as my “main” laptop for a bit and see what problems I encounter.

Again I have to say that this new shell is gorgeous. I *love* the glass look but then I always liked capability in the BSD/Linux shells. 😉 Still no main window “glassiness” though which is annoying, maybe I am just not finding the configuration for it but I doubt it, looks like they have the border’s in glass but the middle is solid. This is especially annoying for me for command prompts because I really open a lot of command prompts.

OH!!! I have had a devil of a time previously trying to find the tree view for explorer and son of a gun if it wasn’t already right there with this build, thank you very much for giving me back what I used to have. You have saved me from going and loading progman from Windows 3.1 on my new Vista laptop. :)  I won’t even say how long I spent looking around for that, I could have written a new personalized explorer gui app faster. I won’t mention names but another good friend of mine had no clue either but neither one of us was willing to email our MSFT friends and ask them if they knew how to get it.

Well I had mostly all positive things to say about this so I wanted to take the time to post this entry. I know I tend to be a little harsh on our friends in Redmond but this entry is to show that I can say good things too. 🙂 I have to say that Vista 5365 seems to be a good way to end a pretty great month overall.

Man I am so happy to see the tree view back on explorer….

Oh if anyone has their sound working on their HP DV8000 with Vista please drop me a line. I expect if it can be done I can figure it out, but it would be oh so much easier if someone would just point me in the direction.

I think it’s high time I installed Vista. Morituri te salutant.

Yes definitely. I am loving it. I found a bug with the clock gadgets which I have submitted and I still don’t have sound but I now believe that is due to no 64 bit drivers existing for the sound device in the HP laptop. I am going to burn the 32 bit version and try that too.

I’ve got a DV8230us and I’ve installed beta 2 but on boot my system crashes, and I think I’ve linked it to the intel SATA AHCI controller driver, but the only one on the hp website needs a floopy drive, and I don’t have a usb external one. Did you have to deal with this, or do you know of a way to deal with this? If you could send me an email I’d really appreciate it, thanks for reading my message.

I have not had an issue like that, I simply installed and it was off and running. As the builds progressed I have seen more and more of the devices found and accepted by default on x86 and as of Beta 2 now everything is discovered and accepted. x64 is another matter, that still isn’t working too awfully well.

    Now downloading Vista for dv8000

anything to look out for as I install?

  6. joe says:

I personally didn’t have any trouble with the x86 install. The x64 install was a trainwreck. 🙂

    Hi Joe,

can you confirm that the x86 version, the sound works ok?

I also have a DV8000T which I’ve set up for dual-boot, XP Pro and Vista Beta 2. I agree that Vista looks awesome and it’s incredibly stable too. Hibernation’s a little flaky, but I suspect they’ll get that right before release. I am also having a problem with “no sound’. Did you ever figure this out?

  9. joe says:

Yes my sound is fine under x86. I didn’t have to do anything special, it autodetected it during the load. Actually beta 2 was the first build that found every single device on the laptop without me doing anything extra.
