Sometimes you should ask for help…

So this is posting about my personal stupidity. ๐Ÿ™‚

Many of my friends will likely enjoy this as they laughwhen I point out when I do stupid things.

Let me prefix this by saying I like to do things myself in many cases, unless someone is already right there, I don’t tend to bother other people to help with things, I have done some amazing things by myself simply by thinking through the problem. It is good practice because you never know when you will actually be stuck trying to do amazing things and all you have is your left and right hands. I think this attitude is a result of how I grew up where my parents were the do it yourself types as well and we would constantly rip things apart and rebuild them ourselves. Car engines, houses, you name it. It is a very nice feeling to know that pretty much anything you need to fix you can likely figure out and fix. Anyway….

So I have been living in my new house a few weeks with no washer and dryer… don’t ask… No never mind, yes, I have a ton of underwear and socks and other clothes… Nothing gross was going on, just had other priorities. Well I hit the two minute buzzed on socks so I needed to get something into place so the goal for this weekend was to get washer and dryer in place and running. Now this is not as easy as it sounds, I have this really really really nice Whirlpool Duet washer/dryer set. The problem with them is that

a. They are 150 or so feet from my house in the pole barn.

b. Have to be carried up stairs

c. The washer is heavier than well… than is comfortable for one person to move

d. The Dryer is set up for natural gas and the nearest source of natural gas is 1/2 mile down towards 26 mile road.

So I say screw a-c, I am going to move that washer into place. I put it on my hand truck (aka dolly) and wheel it across the driveway and start cruising up the stairs. Well the hand truck decides to break on me and I decide to break too (at least I don’t think my arm is supposed to twist that way) and it slams the most important part, the electronics face against the bannister on my stairs and I hear breaking sounds… Ugh. Well I get pissed off at myself because that is what I tend to do when I screw up my personal stuff (I don’t get anywhere near as upset or mad at others for some reason) and get hulk like and by gosh despite an arm that wants to fall off get the washer into the utility room and I look at it thinking, I may have destroyed it because the selector knob is broken off and it doesn’t look so good under it…

I start to tear it apart and notice there are screws I have never seen before so don’t have the tools so go up to Home Depot and get a new hand truck and the proper tools. I also get a hot dog which due to my grumpiness wasn’t as fun as it usually is when I am at Home Depot on Sundays and btw, I apologize for having to put up with my sore mood. ๐Ÿ™‚ I get back home, tear the rest of the stuff apart, find the broken piece and thankfully the piece that broke off of it. I look at it and realize that the break is in such a way that gluing it may actually work well. So I break out the super glue and go to town and it works great. I put it all together and it is now washing a tub load of, well nothing, I didn’t want a chance of ruining any clothes. Let’s just see if it gets through the whole cycle. I have to say I am pretty pleased with myself for this.

However… as I perform the review of my actions I realize that had I just gone next door and got a neighbor or called my brother, I could have saved myself at least 4-5 hours of screwing around and an arm that hurts like hell. This was clearly a case where imposing on someone else for 15 minutes not only would have been desirable but eminently desireable. Thankfully my arm shall hurt for a few days which will be a good reminder of my lack of sense. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh what about the dryer? Well that obviously couldn’t be worked on today since I have been fighting with my own stupid actions all day. I have the orifice that needs to replace the natural gas orifice so I am good there. But in the meanwhile I will move the old owners old dryer back into place so I can wash (and dry) socks.

Oh misc updates, finally got carpet, bedroom, kitchen furniture will be here at the end of the month, I am kind of screwed at the moment on living room furniture as the set I wanted was discontinued and nothing else I have seen anywhere appeals to me. I figure it is meant to be so I will sit tight for now and not do anything but move the old stuff from the old house into the living room even though it is woefully small in that huge room.

New House, new furniture in fact everything is new! What have/will you do with your old house, furniture and bits? Is it a fresh start or just a case of your old furniture not suiting your new home? Any picture updates…..

    Hey Iain,
I am going from a 1500 sq ft house w/ no basement to a 1900 sq ft house with a 1900 sq ft basement with 9 foot ceilings. So considerably more space. The old living room furniture will work short term but really never was something I liked, it just fit in the space that it was previously in. The bedroom set was never done properly either, I ordered a “proper” bedroom set this time. And my old kitchen table is lost in my new kitchen LOL. The old house is on the market as of today.

I have lots of pics to post, just don’t have my main PC up yet that has my photo editing software and Expressions Web loaded on it. I got trim up in the computer room late last night so hopefullly tonight or this coming weekend after the Thanksgiving holiday I can get the computer room more set up and start getting back at my music collection, pictures, and web stuff again. ๐Ÿ™‚

I look forward to it. The detailed progress pictures of your Pole Parn are excellent, almost as though the viewer is there watching while it was happening. You’re very lucky to know people in the business who can help you and do a good job, I think it’s quite rare to find that!

    Dear Joe,

Hi. I guess this finds you not doing so well. I’m sorry you had to come out and admit your personal stupidity.

I’m also sorry that you could not lift a washer by yourself. How humbling must it be to have to admit your mental and physical weaknesses in 1 blog entry. Sanjay Tandon would never have let himself come into this predicament fore the White Knight could have lifted the washer all by himself without a hand truck. More importantly my success in defending security infrastructures worldwide has given me a certain level of financial comfort which would have allowed me to hire someone else to move a washer and dryer. Iรขโ‚ฌโ„ขm sorry that your level of expertise in directory services has not afforded you the same financial reward, therefore requiring you to remodel your house on your own, have family pave your pole barn, and require you to move you appliances on your own.

I wish you well on your journey – may it be a truly fulfilling one for you.

    Best wishes,
    TFST
