I’m not so sure that outcome is inevitable. Apple doesn’t compete on technical specifications or price, unlike the other vendors. It’s an interesting phenomenon because it goes against 20+ years of the computer industry’s understanding of business models. Our industry believes that cheaper with more features are an inevitable consequence and unbeatable combination; however, Apple changes the argument by saying that the right features and the right implementation trump those attributes with the right audience.

I think the Android tablets are very interesting, though they need more than being cheaper to really compete. Samsung sees that with the Tab and are trying to differentiate their products. It’ll be fun to watch!

I was looking at it more from a flexibility standpoint. I don’t think iPad will go away, nor the iPhone, but I expect their relevance to decline as Android evolves. I visualize lots of highly customized uses for these devices from school books to devices to help you find your way around large buildings/companies/libraries, to plugging into your automobiles or homes to get reports and/or control functions.

Its like Ballmer said ages ago… Developers developers developers developers… I think the Android world is more geared towrads developers and allowing them to produce what they want.

Apple could combat this by being more open on what they allow without jailbreaking but I don’t see it happening.
