Capturing VHS Video to MPG or WMV

by @ 12:11 am on 6/9/2006. Filed under tech

So what do you use to capture VHS Videos? I picked up a DVD Express and it just completely sucks. I got it to work long enough to capture two 20 minute home videos. Pretty worthless.

It seems that my Media Center with Hauppage cards can capture as well but I don’t get any audio which is worthless.

Thoughts?

I have a new (birthday present) consumer-level DVD recorder. It works for my purposes – but I’m hardly going to rave about its quality, and some of the formats it produces require specialised software to play.
It’s a shame that so many of the companies providing this technology are tied to the companies that make the movies – I’m just plain peeved with how many movies and technologies prevent me from moving content around from one medium to another.
What did I buy, the rights to watch the movie, or the plastic disk or tape it’s on?
Pretty soon, VHS players will have been consigned to the same location as 8-track players, and I’m not going to buy those movies over again that I have on VHS.
In fact, I buy fewer movies because of the non-portability of the media. Sad – as usual, “piracy protection” ends up causing fewer sales (at least to me)!
