Ding dong – WinFS is dead

by @ 7:02 pm on 6/25/2006. Filed under tech

OI.

One of the biggest things that folks have been looking for out of Microsoft for some time now has pretty much been swept under the carpet.

If you read this and get anything other than WinFS has been 86’ed I would be surprised. It sounds like they have killed it and now are trying to strip out the useful bits from the rotting corpse for SQL Server and other components.

The funny thing is the attempt at saying this is what the customers wanted? Maybe some customers were saying they wanted the WinFS features in SQL, but do you think they said we don’t want it as a standalone file system?

Maybe they should release it to SourceForge and see if someone can finish it.

My one thought is… I wonder how much money has been spent on this project over the years… Microsoft as of the last many years seems to have done an interesting job of spending lots and lots of money and not deliverying thinks it has promised. I understand that writing software is not like building a bridge… but this is getting a bit silly.

Good post Joe, I had not heard about this. Although this was not going to be in Vista it was something that many were looking forward to down the road.

I’m trying to figure out how Microsoft is going to convince businesses to migrate to Vista. Will the end user really be better off?

Where I work it doesn’t really matter Microsoft already has our money through the software assurance program.
