Getting geeked…

by @ 7:43 am. Filed under general

I just picked up the check for the Mortgage company yesterday for the closing on Indian Trail next week… Everything is still flowing along like it is in a pre-determined groove and this annoys me only because I don’t like the idea of predestined movement. If things are predestined, at least give me a program so I know positively when to expect the bad stuff and the good stuff so I can appreciate both more. 🙂

Getting jittery and geeked up. You get that momentary feeling of “WHAT AM I DOING??? YOU SHOULD KEEP THE MONEY IN THE BANK!!!” but then after a couple of seconds that subsides and you know everything will be fine. 🙂

I went to Ikea for the first time two days ago and again yesterday. Interesting place, some of the stuff I really liked, some of it I really disliked. I wasn’t much of a fan of most of the living room and bedroom stuff. It wasn’t “substantial” enough if you know what I mean, more the type of stuff I would have in a college dorm room. The kitchen stuff on the other hand and the storage options were very cool.

Info and first pics of the new house

by @ 11:32 pm. Filed under house stuff

I am getting hit with lots of emails about the new “ranch”. I need to come up with a good nickname for it. My old house was called the “Blu House” (sic) even though I made it white, originally it was blue. Sort of like a blue-hair (built in 1939, that works). The new place is only 9 years old and is a ranch and is on almost 12 acres and is on a road called Indian Trail (back off stalkers, I own and can use effectively several firearms).

  • The Ranch
  • Happy Ranch
  • The Peanut Ranch
  • Happy Campground
  • Indian Trail
  • Rancho Bobbo
  • The Compound
  • Contentment
  • Joewareville
  • Trouble’s Acres
  • Safe Haven
  • TANSTAAFL
  • Grok
  • TEFL
  • ???

The house is on propane, septic, and well water[1] so I will be roughing it a bit; honestly it isn’t that bad except for the cost of Propane. Comcast cable is available but I haven’t decided if I will use them or not… I looked at their web site and it looks like highway robbery next to Wide Open West, not sure why ANYONE would want to use them. I may go with AT&T Yahoo High Speed and satellite TV instead.

I have lots of ideas for the place, there will be lots of pics going up on the blog here eventually. There is a nice pond that is about 25′ deep sitting there and is alleged to contain “lots” of fish. I have to clean it up around the outskirts though to get into it, it has gotten overgrown this year but I was assured it was previously groomed and it looks like it. I intend to let the first 100-200 feet of the front yard to go “wild” and plant wild flowers and trees and maybe toss an old piece of farm equipment or two out there. I like the country look. I will push the backyard grooming a bit past the pond instead. I am going to look into expanding the pond in diameter as well. I wouldn’t mind seeing a 1-2 acre pond personally. I also want to go in and trim up the back acreage to make it more park like as well as clear a nice line around the entire property so I can drive the truck around the outskirts and post NO HUNTING signs everywhere. Attention all Bambi’s, Turkeys, Pheasants, etc, you are safe on my property. 🙂

I need to buy or get a long term lease on a bobcat or a tractor with a bucket and a backhoe. How fun would that all be?

I will be putting up some evergreens to block out the views of the nearby houses. Kind of irks me that there are 12 acres and neighbors within 200 feet. But I will get past it. 🙂

The inside is not bad at all, mostly lipstick work if you are a “flip this house” kind of TV watcher. It is ~1900 sq ft with a full basement the same size so effectively I have ~3800 feet which is amazing compared to my current ~1500 sq ft. I have some cool ideas for the living room for AV options. I am looking into a front projector to give me an effective 150″ wide screen television set. Basically paint one wall of the cathedral ceiling living room white and blast the image up onto it. Also I am going to figure out how to suspend my Bose 901s for maximum sound quality and no footprint. Those are pure music speakers though, the multimedia sound system will be something else entirely. I want to have it ready for the launch of Halo 3. ;o)

I am actually going to paint with colors this time. My last place I used all whites so whomever came in after me (I knew I wasn’t staying) wouldn’t go, yuck, what horrible colors, we will never be able to cover that properly. This place I intend to keep for a long while. Also I am thinking murals and will come up with some designs and make my Michigan sister come visit me with her painting equipment. She owes me. I figure she can put in a month solid putting up murals.

They put in the prep work for a fireplace but never put in the fireplace, I will correct that. Nothing better than laying in front of the fireplace with that special someone plus it can be quite fun to pop popcorn in a fireplace. I will do a real fireplace, not a gas fireplace, at least that is the plan. I love the popping and crackling of a wood fireplace plus I have a lot of wood from the backyard to process.

I need a big deck off the back and am planning on a pool likely by next year or the year after that is right off the deck and actually surrounded by more deck.

The basement has amazing 9/10 foot high ceilings. Loving it. Not thrilled with how the basement was partially finished but it has a pretty interesting Superman logo drawn on one wall. I will likely change the wall layout and set up a little data center down there as well as my work office. Eventually pool table and foosball and maybe a pinball machine or two. Dedicated kids play area for nephews and nieces. Lots of storage closet space. etc.

My very first project will be to get a 3/4 car garage put up either attached to the home or REALLY close. I want that done before I even move in as it gives me a staging area for the lipstick work and moving stuff in nicely. I have no desire to walk a hundred or so feet to the pole barn to get to my truck. Next will be to concrete the entire pole barn floor, currently only about a quarter of it is concrete. Once that is done it will be safe storage for the 2007 Mustang, my brother’s 1970 Mach I Mustang and possibly the 1968 (I think) Jaguar XKE Convertible that belongs to a good friend of mine. I also wouldn’t mind finding some scrap heap 60’s hot rod to start working on slowly over time, say like an old Galaxy 500, Mustang, or Goat.

I have to say that I am extremely lucky to have found this and be in a position to get it; I don’t forget that for a second. The current economic situation in Michigan likely was helpful, however, I don’t feel like I “took anyone for a ride”. I am all about good karma and try to keep that in mind when doing things, I bid on the house, they countered, I accepted. My luck has been hit and miss for a bit, I am hoping this new place signals great change and just an amazing amount of incredibly great luck, communication, and mind blowing happiness. Time will tell.

The way the whole finding of it and purchasing of it has gone it is like I was just along for the ride. I will have to type up the whole story at some point, it is quite odd. I believe I was driven to get this by forces beyond my comprehension. Seriously. This was not in my 5 year plan… At all. My 5 year plan had me on a 20+ acre lot with a Deltec Round House as the regular readers of my blog know… This purchase was spur of the moment and hit me while I was working on GFCI circuits in the kitchen of the Blu House (sic). Odd to say the very least.

Thoughts, ideas, comments, as always, fully welcomed.

[1] Well water but it has a reverse osmosis filter system and water softener in place.

First pic… This is the property layout. It is an irregular 14 acre rectangle (352’x1650′) with a ~2 acre rectangle sadly cut out of it.

Next pics are of the house proper

Now some selected shots of the pole barn and immediate back yard

Buying a house? Need the best mortgage broker/banker/<insert title here> in existence?

by @ 12:25 pm. Filed under house stuff

Then you want my Mortgage friend.

Brandy Belcher with Quicken Loans / Rock Financial.

If you are looking to buy a home, refi a home, whatever, call her, she will make your life good. Absolutely amazing. I am pretty sure she can finance you regardless of where you are, not just in Michigan. Outstanding personality as well.

I had one loan set up to get my new house and then she kept poking around while the sellers did whatever it is that sellers do and she actually found an even better loan which shaved another .7% or so off my rate. How many mortgage bankers are going to do that? Once they have you sold, bam, next. I admit, I am a charming guy and people want to help me out when they can, but I think she would do that for anyone, not just me. Oh also, she is a pet lover… She has 4 dogs and she actually has coats she puts on two of them to go out in the rain… You know she is a good, if not weird, person just for that…

Apologies to everyone…

by @ 2:44 pm. Filed under general

I have to apologize to everyone for being so quiet lately. Just tons of stuff going on in my life and not the least of which is I finally bought a house with the property I have been looking for for so long. House is ~1900 sq feet with just under 12 acres (~half a million square feet… Yes, I really wanted about 21-22 acres so I could say yes I have one MILLLION sq ft in my best Dr. Evil voice but you take what you can get these days right?). I will of course be getting pictures and posting them at some point. Lots of projects for me on the property. Anyway, that isn’t not the least of everything going on in the personal life plus I am still working quite a bit and have to fly back out to Federal Way again this week.

As for joeware tools… Thanks for the hundreds, err probably at this point thousands of emails… I will be responding to them all as soon as I get a chance. Thanks for the suggestions and if you just wrote to say how much you like the utilities, you are welcome. 🙂

The only two utilities I am currently working on are adfind and admod, I have some cool new mods in them but for the life of me I don’t recall what they are at this moment in time because I haven’t had a chance to look at them in a bit.

Oh, for those asking after whether or not I am updating Active Directory Third Edition to the Fourth Edition for Longhorn. I have not been contacted by O’Reilly publishing and I haven’t contacted them. Quite frankly I am not sure if I could find the time to do it anyway. Don’t despair though, I do want to write some more and hopefully on the deck I need to build on the back of the new house I will find the time and energy to slap some words together in a semi-lucid and incredibly humourous manner and get them out there for people to read. My would love to write books would be books on AdFind/AdMod with tons of AD and ADAM info or a fully blown book on ADAM since that chapter in the AD3E book has been quite popular from what I am seeing in my emails. I would also like to write the next great American best seller so I could dedicate the rest of my life to taking it easy and having fun doing stuff like that some more but I haven’t thought of what that book will say yet so I have to hold off.

Take care everyone… And to all friends and family that I haven’t spoken to recently, I am very sorry, I will try to get back into the saddle again soon. I will be up in Cadillac for a family reunion of sorts at the end of the month at my sister’s (who lives in Michigan) place. She is going to be simultaneously thrilled with me and pissed at me when she sees me but that is how the brother/sister relationship is supposed to be. I just hope she doesn’t kill me before she realizes how thrilled she is with me. While I am not a small guy, my sister (who lives in Michigan, the one in California is a punk) is a tough shit and grew up in a house with 5 boys so you know she doesn’t use her fists for spreading cake frosting. Those knuckles are scarred.

I have to also say the Cicadas are going nuts right now. I love it, nothing better than a hot sunny day, a nice cool breeze, and cicadas droning in the background. Reminds me of when I was just a small runt in northern Michigan growing up.

Misc Email Question – AdFind

by @ 3:04 pm. Filed under tech

Question

Joe,

I’m trying to use AdFind to find members of a specific group. Can I do
this (I haven’t been able to get it to work thus far)?

Thanks

Reply

Yes, the basic form would be

adfind -default -f name=groupname member

This doesn’t take all sorts of things into account but there is no simple LDAP query that will handle every case of enumerating group membership authoritatively and adfind is an LDAP query tool, not a “get me the authoritative answer to this or that question” tool. Depending on what is needed, it might be authoritative, but it completely depends on what is being asked and how the specific functionality you are wondering about is implemented under the covers. Groups just happen to be a massively painful area.

Want to read more? Use google, I have written on this topic in various forums so much my brain hurts from it.

Do I coddle my cat too much?

by @ 7:55 am. Filed under general

I love my cat, she rocks. Her name is Trouble and yes it is self-fulfilling.

I started to think that just maybe I coddle her too much though this morning when I was eating some Shredded Mini-Wheats and she walks up and sits down right in front of me and puts her paw on the side of my bowl and meows basically saying, “Where’s mine you little bitch?”… So I finish up what I am going to eat and dip the spoon in the milk careful to avoid anything but milk. I put it in front of her and she dips down to drink it but stops… I raise the spoon a little and then she starts drinking. She finishes the first spoon and so I get her another spoonful and put it up for her and she starts moving towards it and again stops, I raise it up a little and then she starts drinking it.

This is the same cat that won’t drink out of the bowl of water nor even the toilet, I have to turn the faucet on in the Jacuzzi tub to a very slow leak and she will drink from that…. She has two kitty litter pans in case one doesn’t “feel right” and she has at least 8 or 9 locations around the house set up for her to lay down and sleep.

Is that too much coddling?

Reboot is rarely the correct answer

by @ 7:47 am. Filed under general

I get a chuckle with how many places will see SYMPTOMS of some sort and the first thing they come up will be to _decide_ the problem is that they need to reboot a DC. If I had to give this form of troubleshooting a name I would give it something like “Wishful thinking”, “I should be fired”, “I can’t be bothered to do my job”, etc.

This is especially popular in a larger orgs with a mix of decentralized and centralized support resources and domain controllers. Someone will have maybe once seen that rebooting a DC “solved” a problem and that becomes THE solution. You will get someone out in a remote site or in an application group who can somehow get physical access to a DC (or server in general) who will then take it as their job to reboot that server that they think needs to be rebooted, regardless of whether it does or not. Alternately maybe they will “request” the reboot and when I quote the word request it is because I don’t mean request, I mean they why and complain and demand you reboot as they “know” that will solve the problem.

The proper answer is to try and work out what the problem is, especially if it is recurring. I have walked into environments where I have been told the solution to a problem is to just reboot the DC when it occurs. This is not a solution, this is a bandage to alleviate symptoms. A solution involves actually troubleshooting and trying to work out the actual issues. And you can’t do that if the first thing you do is reboot.

This silly type “troubleshooting” mechanism is not just something low skill admins come up with but it is also something that I have heard come from the mouths of MSFT people unfortunately, more often MCS (Consulting) folks versus PSS. Most of the senior folks in PSS are very good in this area, the last thing they want is rebooting because it often erases all evidence of what is going on if the problem really is at the server being rebooted.

As one quick actual example, there was one company I went into back in 2001 who had some issues. Approximately 80% of the DCs in one domain (so about 80 DCs) weren’t actually working properly only they had no monitoring and they had no one proactively looking at things. The troubleshooting mechanism was if anyone at the site complained, the DC was rebooted. The local site people actually trained that that was the solution so their tickets started changing from, we see these symptoms to “reboot this DC” which would be simply processed by the centralized people (This is a firing offense in my opinion, trouble tickets are often like you telling your doctor your issues, he/she is supposed to take that and really work through the problem, not listen to you say what you would like and then just do it). When my group took these DCs over we were getting double digit reboot requests a week and immediately our response was “no, not going to happen”, you tell us what is going on and what you think is wrong and we will take it from there. I can’t begin to explain how bad this pissed some people off because they just wanted it done. I had high level escalations etc and thankfully this is an easy battle to win if your management aren’t complete idiots. The argument is “I would like to figure out WHY this needs to be done every X days/months/etc versus just doing it and maybe we can remove the reboot need entirely and give more availability.”… See how I got that availability key word in there. Mucho helpful. Anyway, there wasn’t a single issue I don’t think we didn’t track down to specific items that we were able to correct and the environment within 3-6 months stabilized dramatically due to lack of reboots and actually having everything configured properly.

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes a reboot is the answer, even the correct one. But you need to work to understand WHY it is. Rebooting because you know it will allieve symptoms is not troubleshooting, don’t pretend that it is. If you do reboot, what other steps are you then taking to ascertain what that reboot did to solve the issue and then prevent those things from occurring again?
